I am not sure how they came up with the figure they did in that article but it seems pretty wrong to me. That means each ship cost $1.3-$1.6 billion give or take depending on the exchange rate at the time parts were bought. The 6 ships cost around 6.4 billion pounds, which works out to roughly $10 billion us. That being said the original link here is quite off. In that regard it is a very good platform. I will preface this by saying I like the T45's quite a bit given what they were designed to do, which to me is basically be a highly potent platform for area air defense that (and this is important) do the job largely by themselves without needing outside assistance. I believe the T45s also lack significant ASW capability, and that would add quite a bit to the cost. That is just not going to happen, particularly given the level of cost overruns on the Type 45 and Astute I would guess they end up costing around 50% more per copy than budgeted now. I am always curious what a more complete comparison of capabilities would bring about in terms of cost for a given level of capability. He links to a story on Virginia Class subs where it pretty clearly shows the ongoing purchase cost to be about $1.75 billion rather than the $2.4 billion listed. There are some other oddities in the story linked too. It would not shock me at all if adding those things essentially made the cost difference amount to zero. The same thing could be said of adding strike capabilities to the ships. Adding it would add substantially to the cost of the ships. I think CEC is the future of things and those ships missed the boat by not having such capacity built in. I think the lack of strike capability, AMB capability and in particularly Cooperative Engagement Capability is a major downside for those ships. Yes Type 45 is cheaper, but I think it is missing a lot of the things it needs for a modern warfare environment. I also take some issue with comparisons of the Type 45 to the Burkes in terms of cost. I still say I will eat my own hat if the QE's get built for 3.5 Billion a piece.
